Heavy Rain Brings Bengaluru Traffic to a Standstill

Bengaluru, July 3: Continuous rainfall across Bengaluru has led to severe traffic congestion on several major roads, leaving thousands of commuters stranded in long queues. Waterlogging in low-lying areas, pothole-ridden roads, and slow-moving vehicles have disrupted normal life across the city.

Since early morning, moderate to heavy rain has been reported in many parts of Bengaluru. The city’s major traffic corridors, including Silk Board Junction, Outer Ring Road, Marathahalli, Whitefield, Hebbal, KR Puram, Yelahanka, Electronic City, and Mysuru Road, witnessed heavy congestion as vehicles moved at a slow pace. Many office-goers and school commuters experienced significant delays during peak hours.

Water accumulation on roads has made driving difficult, particularly for two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. In several locations, vehicles broke down after being stranded in flooded stretches, adding to the traffic chaos. Emergency services and traffic police were seen working to restore normal traffic movement.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru is likely to receive more rain accompanied by thunderstorms over the next 24 to 48 hours. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and to remain alert while driving.

The Bengaluru Traffic Police have deployed additional personnel at major junctions and suggested alternative routes to reduce congestion. Real-time traffic updates are also being shared through official social media channels to help commuters plan their journeys.

Meanwhile, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials are working to clear stormwater drains, remove fallen tree branches, and pump out water from flooded areas. Disaster response teams have also been placed on standby to handle emergency situations if required.

Urban planning experts say that the recurring problems of traffic congestion and waterlogging during every monsoon highlight the need for better drainage systems, improved road maintenance, and stronger urban infrastructure. They believe long-term planning is essential to reduce the impact of heavy rains on the city’s transportation network.

With rainfall expected to continue over the coming days, authorities have urged motorists to drive carefully, maintain safe distances, avoid waterlogged roads wherever possible, and follow official weather and traffic advisories. Commuters are also advised to allow extra travel time as traffic delays are likely to persist until weather conditions improve.

Gas Cylinder Explosion Sparks Fire at Apartment Near Garuda Mall in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: A fire broke out at an apartment near Garuda Mall in Bengaluru after a gas cylinder reportedly exploded while cooking, prompting a swift response from the Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services. The incident caused panic among residents in the neighborhood as thick smoke was seen rising from the building.

According to preliminary information, the explosion occurred inside a residential apartment during routine cooking activities. The blast was followed by a fire that quickly spread within a portion of the apartment, leading residents and nearby occupants to evacuate the premises as a precaution.

Soon after receiving information about the incident, personnel from the Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services reached the location with firefighting equipment and emergency vehicles. Firefighters immediately began operations to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjoining apartments or nearby structures. Their prompt action helped bring the situation under control within a short period.

Police personnel also arrived at the scene to assist with crowd management and ensure public safety while emergency teams carried out firefighting operations. The area surrounding the apartment was temporarily secured to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles and to minimize risks to residents and passers-by.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the explosion. While initial reports indicate that a gas cylinder exploded during cooking, officials are expected to conduct a detailed inspection to determine whether the incident resulted from a gas leak, equipment malfunction, improper handling, or any other technical reason. The findings of the investigation will be released after experts complete their assessment.

As of now, officials have not issued any confirmed information regarding injuries, fatalities, or the extent of property damage. Emergency responders continued to inspect the building after the fire was extinguished to ensure that there were no remaining hotspots or structural risks. Residents were advised to cooperate with authorities until safety checks were completed.

Incidents involving cooking gas cylinders highlight the importance of following basic safety precautions in homes. Fire safety experts routinely advise residents to inspect gas cylinders, regulators, and connecting hoses regularly, ensure adequate ventilation while cooking, and immediately report any smell of leaking gas to the appropriate authorities. In the event of a suspected leak, electrical switches should not be operated, and occupants should move to a safe location before contacting emergency services.

The latest incident near Garuda Mall has once again drawn attention to the need for regular maintenance of household LPG equipment and greater public awareness about fire prevention measures in residential buildings. Fire officials often emphasize that timely maintenance and adherence to safety guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of accidents involving cooking gas.

Authorities are expected to release additional information after completing their investigation and damage assessment. Until then, officials have urged the public not to rely on unverified information circulating on social media and to follow updates issued through official channels.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and more details are likely to emerge once emergency teams and police complete their inspection of the affected apartment. Further updates are awaited.

Mount Carmel College Attains Deemed-to-be University Status, Plans Major Expansion Near Bengaluru

Prathiban DC

Bengaluru: Mount Carmel College (Autonomous), one of Bengaluru’s prominent higher education institutions, has achieved a significant milestone by receiving Deemed-to-be University status from the Ministry of Education. The announcement marks a new phase in the institution’s academic journey and is expected to open the door for expanded educational opportunities, enhanced research initiatives, and greater academic autonomy.

Speaking to the media, Principal George Lekha highlighted the institution’s future plans following the recognition. She stated that the college has secured approximately 200 acres of land near Devanahalli, where a new campus is planned. The proposed facility is expected to function as a residential campus and serve as a hub for the institution’s future academic and infrastructural growth.

According to the college administration, the new status will enable the institution to introduce a broader range of academic offerings. Plans are underway to expand programmes across various disciplines and provide students with greater flexibility through short-term, medium-term, and long-term courses. The move is aimed at meeting the evolving needs of students and industry while strengthening the institution’s role in higher education.

Despite the expansion plans, the college has assured students and parents that academic activities at its existing Vasanth Nagar campus in Bengaluru will continue without interruption. Current students will be able to complete their programmes as scheduled, and the institution has emphasized that the transition to Deemed-to-be University status will be managed carefully to ensure continuity in teaching and learning.

The administration has also indicated that discussions are in progress regarding academic procedures such as credit transfers, curriculum frameworks, and related matters. These deliberations are intended to ensure a smooth transition for students while aligning programmes with the institution’s new academic structure.

To address questions and concerns from families, the college has scheduled a meeting with parents on June 27. The interaction is expected to provide clarity on the transition process, future academic plans, and the implications of the new status for current and prospective students.

The recognition represents another major chapter in the institution’s recent transformation. In 2024, Mount Carmel College introduced a landmark change by opening all of its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to male students. The decision ended the institution’s more than seven-decade history as an exclusively women’s college and marked a shift toward a more inclusive educational model.

Today, the institution offers a diverse academic portfolio that includes 54 undergraduate programmes, 18 postgraduate programmes, and 11 doctoral programmes. With the acquisition of Deemed-to-be University status, the college is expected to gain greater flexibility in designing curricula, launching innovative courses, fostering interdisciplinary studies, and strengthening research and innovation initiatives.

Education experts view the development as an important step not only for the institution but also for Bengaluru’s higher education landscape. The planned expansion near Devanahalli is expected to create additional opportunities for students while contributing to the growth of advanced learning and research facilities in the region.

As Mount Carmel College enters this new phase, the institution aims to build on its long-standing academic legacy while adapting to the changing demands of modern education. The newly granted status is expected to support its vision of expanding access, enhancing academic excellence, and preparing students for emerging opportunities in an increasingly dynamic global environment.

One-Time Settlement Success: BWSSB Collects 12.1 Crore, More Payments Expected

Prathiban DC

Bangalore: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has reported a strong response to its one-time settlement (OTS) scheme for clearing pending water bills. On Sunday, the board announced that it had already collected 12.1 crore from the first set of 56,765 notices sent to consumers. This early result shows that many people are willing to pay their dues when they are given a clear and simple way to do so.

The OTS scheme started on April 6 and will remain open for three months. It is designed to help consumers settle their outstanding water bills by paying only the main amount, while receiving relief on the interest charges. BWSSB officials believe this approach is encouraging more people to come forward and clear their dues without feeling burdened.

After reviewing old records, BWSSB identified more than 2.8 lakh consumers who are eligible for the scheme, out of a total of over 3.7 lakh cases. So far, the board has printed and sent more than 2.1 lakh customized notices to different sub-divisions across Bengaluru. These notices contain details of the pending amount and instructions on how to take advantage of the scheme.

To manage such a large number of notices, BWSSB has outsourced the printing work to an external agency. This agency is currently producing around 50,000 notices every two days. The board expects all remaining notices to be delivered by May 10, ensuring that every eligible consumer gets a chance to benefit from the scheme within the given time frame.

The main goal of BWSSB is to recover over 471.5 crore in unpaid principal amounts. At the same time, it is offering a waiver of about 252.3 crore in interest charges. This move not only helps the board recover a large amount of money but also provides financial relief to consumers who may have struggled to pay their bills due to accumulated interest over time.

BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar said the response so far shows that people trust systems that are transparent and easy to use. According to him, when consumers feel respected and are given fair options, they are more likely to cooperate. He encouraged all eligible citizens to make use of this opportunity and settle their dues within the scheme period.

Overall, the OTS scheme is expected to benefit both the public and the board. Consumers can clear their pending bills without heavy interest, while BWSSB can strengthen its financial position. This improved revenue will also help the board provide better water supply and sewerage services across Bengaluru in the future.

Bengaluru Woman Arrested for Allegedly Killing Boyfriend in Planned Trap

Prathiban DC

Bengaluru | April 2026

In a shocking incident that has sent waves across the city, a 27-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering her boyfriend in what police describe as a premeditated act carried out under the guise of a staged interaction.

According to investigators, the incident occurred at the woman’s residence in the western part of Bengaluru. The victim, also 27, had reportedly been invited over by the accused, who suggested a surprise activity to gain his trust. Authorities believe the situation was deliberately designed to make the victim vulnerable.

Police sources indicate that during the interaction, the man was blindfolded and restrained. What he believed to be a consensual setup soon turned into a fatal situation. Investigators allege that the accused then used a flammable substance and set him on fire, resulting in severe burn injuries that led to his death.

One of the most disturbing aspects of the case is the alleged recording of the incident. Officials state that the accused captured parts of the act on her mobile phone, which later became a critical piece of evidence during the investigation.

Initially, the case was suspected to be a suicide or accidental fire. However, inconsistencies at the scene raised suspicions, prompting a deeper probe. Forensic analysis and digital evidence reportedly played a significant role in uncovering the sequence of events and shifting the case toward a murder investigation.

Authorities suspect that the crime may have been motivated by personal issues within the relationship, including possible disputes or emotional conflict. While the exact motive is still under investigation, police believe the act was planned in advance.

The accused has been taken into custody, and legal proceedings are underway. Officials have indicated that relevant sections pertaining to murder and criminal conspiracy are likely to be invoked as the case develops further.

The incident has sparked concern among residents, highlighting issues of trust and safety in personal relationships. Police have assured that a thorough investigation is being conducted to ensure justice is served.

Further updates are expected as more details emerge in the coming days.
