One-Time Settlement Success: BWSSB Collects 12.1 Crore, More Payments Expected

Prathiban DC

Bangalore: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has reported a strong response to its one-time settlement (OTS) scheme for clearing pending water bills. On Sunday, the board announced that it had already collected 12.1 crore from the first set of 56,765 notices sent to consumers. This early result shows that many people are willing to pay their dues when they are given a clear and simple way to do so.

The OTS scheme started on April 6 and will remain open for three months. It is designed to help consumers settle their outstanding water bills by paying only the main amount, while receiving relief on the interest charges. BWSSB officials believe this approach is encouraging more people to come forward and clear their dues without feeling burdened.

After reviewing old records, BWSSB identified more than 2.8 lakh consumers who are eligible for the scheme, out of a total of over 3.7 lakh cases. So far, the board has printed and sent more than 2.1 lakh customized notices to different sub-divisions across Bengaluru. These notices contain details of the pending amount and instructions on how to take advantage of the scheme.

To manage such a large number of notices, BWSSB has outsourced the printing work to an external agency. This agency is currently producing around 50,000 notices every two days. The board expects all remaining notices to be delivered by May 10, ensuring that every eligible consumer gets a chance to benefit from the scheme within the given time frame.

The main goal of BWSSB is to recover over 471.5 crore in unpaid principal amounts. At the same time, it is offering a waiver of about 252.3 crore in interest charges. This move not only helps the board recover a large amount of money but also provides financial relief to consumers who may have struggled to pay their bills due to accumulated interest over time.

BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar said the response so far shows that people trust systems that are transparent and easy to use. According to him, when consumers feel respected and are given fair options, they are more likely to cooperate. He encouraged all eligible citizens to make use of this opportunity and settle their dues within the scheme period.

Overall, the OTS scheme is expected to benefit both the public and the board. Consumers can clear their pending bills without heavy interest, while BWSSB can strengthen its financial position. This improved revenue will also help the board provide better water supply and sewerage services across Bengaluru in the future.

Cracks Behind the Results: Students in Karnataka Struggle with Ground-Level Education Challenges

Prathiban DC

Bengaluru: While Karnataka continues to be recognized as one of India’s leading education hubs, a closer look reveals that thousands of students across the state are facing serious challenges that often go unnoticed behind impressive academic results.

One of the most pressing issues is the shortage of teachers in government schools. With tens of thousands of vacancies still unfilled, many schools, especially in rural areas operate with minimal staff. In some cases, a single teacher is responsible for handling multiple classes and subjects. This not only affects the quality of teaching but also places immense pressure on existing educators, ultimately impacting student learning outcomes.

Infrastructure gaps remain another major concern. While urban schools benefit from better facilities, many rural institutions still lack basic amenities such as adequate classrooms, laboratories, and libraries. The delay in upgrading high schools to pre-university colleges in several regions has forced students to travel long distances for higher education. For many, particularly girls, this becomes a barrier, leading to increased dropout rates.

The rising cost of private education is also adding to the burden on families. Parents across the state have raised concerns over high fees, expensive textbooks, uniforms, and other hidden charges. This growing financial strain has widened the gap between students who can afford quality education and those who rely on under-resourced government schools.

Another worrying trend is the declining interest in the teaching profession. Fewer students are opting for teacher training courses, leading to concerns about future shortages of qualified educators. Experts warn that this could further weaken the education system if not addressed through better incentives and policy support.

Policy implementation remains inconsistent on the ground. While the government has introduced modern reforms such as digital learning and skill-based education, many schools are still struggling to meet basic academic needs. Critics argue that focusing on advanced initiatives without strengthening foundational infrastructure may widen existing gaps rather than bridge them.

In addition to academic challenges, students are also facing digital and mental health concerns. Increased exposure to smartphones and online platforms has led to issues such as distraction, reduced concentration, and screen addiction. Educators and parents have expressed the need for balanced digital usage and better awareness about mental well-being among students.

Higher education institutions are not immune to these problems. Several universities are grappling with faculty shortages and declining enrollment in traditional courses. This has led many students to shift toward private institutions or skill-based programs, raising questions about the long-term sustainability of public higher education.

Despite these challenges, students across Karnataka continue to show resilience and determination. However, education experts emphasize that strong exam results alone do not reflect the true health of the system. Addressing these ground-level issues is essential to ensure that every student, regardless of background, has access to quality education.

Conclusion:
Karnataka’s education system stands at a crossroads. While it boasts talented students and strong academic outcomes, the underlying challenges of teacher shortages, infrastructure gaps, rising costs, and policy implementation must be urgently addressed to secure a better future for the next generation.

The event will be held at Palace Grounds, Gate No. 7, King’s Court Palace, Bengaluru, and is expected to bring together more than 10,000 mechanics, workshop owners, technicians, and industry professionals from various parts of India. Organizers describe it as one of the biggest gatherings ever conducted in the two-wheeler technician sector in the country.

A press conference was held in Bengaluru on Monday to officially announce the event and outline its objectives. Senior office bearers of KTWOTA said the convention is designed not only as a celebration of Labour Day but also as a platform to highlight the importance of mechanics and technicians who play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s transportation system running smoothly.

The grand convention will be inaugurated by the Honorable Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, U. T. Khader, Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, D. K. Shivakumar, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, and Labour Welfare Minister Santosh Lad, along with several other dignitaries who will participate in the event.

Speaking at the press conference, KTWOTA State President K.S. Prasanna Kumar Gowda emphasized that the gathering is more than just a formal event.

“This convention is not merely a program; it is a celebration of the hardworking hands that keep the country moving every day. Mechanics are the backbone of the transport ecosystem, yet their contributions often go unnoticed. Our aim is to bring them recognition, improve their professional opportunities, and introduce them to modern technologies,” he said.
Other key members present during the media interaction included State Secretary Bhaskar G. Naidu, Advisor Venkat Shyam Raj, EC Member Narayana, and team members Sadik Pasha and Venkatesh Babu, among others.

The organizers highlighted that the convention will focus on skill development, networking opportunities, and awareness of new technological advancements in the automobile repair industry. With the rapid growth of electric vehicles, modern diagnostic systems, and evolving service standards, the association believes technicians must stay updated to remain competitive.
One of the major attractions of the event will be a large-scale technology exhibition showcasing the latest innovations in the two-wheeler servicing and repair sector. Experts and manufacturers are expected to demonstrate advanced tools, modern repair techniques, and upcoming trends in vehicle maintenance.
In addition, a free public service camp will also be conducted, offering complimentary two-wheeler checkups and free engine oil replacement for vehicle owners. This initiative aims to directly benefit the public while also showcasing the service capabilities of trained technicians.

Another important feature of the convention is industry networking, where workshop owners, technicians, manufacturers, and suppliers will have the opportunity to interact directly. Organizers believe this will help create stronger business relationships and improve collaboration within the industry.

KTWOTA officials stated that the larger goal of the convention is to unite the mechanic community from across India under one platform and push for greater dignity and recognition for the profession.
The association, a non-profit body representing workshop owners and technicians, has been actively working for the welfare of mechanics, skill enhancement, and professional growth across Karnataka.
With strong participation expected from across the nation, the May 1 convention is set to become a landmark event for India’s two-wheeler mechanic community and a significant step toward empowering those who keep the wheels of daily life moving.

The victim, also 27, had reportedly been invited over by the accused, who suggested a surprise activity to gain his trust. Authorities believe the situation was deliberately designed to make the victim vulnerable.
