Born Vishwanath Patekar, Nana began his career in Marathi theatre before entering films. He made his film debut with Gaman in 1978 and gradually established himself as an actor capable of portraying intense, complex and emotionally demanding characters.

He also demonstrated his ability to handle comedy, particularly through his popular portrayal of Uday Shetty in Welcome and Welcome Back. His Marathi film career included the acclaimed Natsamrat, which became one of his most celebrated performances.

Over his career spanning nearly five decades, Patekar received three National Film Awards and was honoured with the Padma Shri for his contribution to Indian cinema. Beyond acting, he was also involved in social work and was associated with the Naam Foundation, which worked on issues affecting farmers and drought-hit communities in Maharashtra.
